It was in 1997 or so when the first Latin Mass was offered in the island of Bohol- thanks to a group of individuals who sought the help of the Society of St. Pius X to come and visit the place.
Quite a number of Society priests have come to the said island during the first years: Fr. Daniel Couture (SSPX-Asia District Superior), Fr. Thomas Onoda (now prior of Our Lady of Victories Church), to name a few. In the succeeding years up to now, the Traditional Latin Mass has been constantly offered in Bohol. Aggressions, suppressions and constant attacks from the local Church were also there. And for a religious, Church-centered province, majority of which are devout Catholics loyal to Novo Ordo Missae and the rest of which are ignorant of the real issue, the struggle was not easy at all.
But more difficult is the fact that until now, the Boholano traditionalists do not have a church proper for such a beautiful Mass. Since 1997, the Mass is held in different venues, usually in school auditoriums, if not in private homes if the former are not available. For the past years, they have been campaigning for financial support to build a church. A lot donated by one generous individual is already there but the money for the construction is way below the required budget for the project.
With our help and YOUR financial support, this project will come to a reality. Below is the letter of appeal sent by Engr. Sergio Mellejor, secretary of the Knights of Our Lady.
Peace and warm greetings in the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady!
We, the concerned faithful of the SSPX Mission in Tagbilaran City, have recently gathered a meeting for the Financial Assessment of the Mission. We have found it quite a burden that the subsequent financial survival of the mission is brought possible by the generosity of only certain few persons who ever supported it, since the Traditional Mass have started, in the year 1998. It is realized that it would be lighter to sustain the mission if only everybody would be generous enough to give their share, and pledge to contribute certain amounts for the monthly expenses like the roundtrip ticket for the priest (from Ilo-ilo, to Bohol), his consumption during his stay, and the other necessities for the maintenance of the Holy Mass (pls. see attached page with the contribution form to fill up).
Though some are already aware, but again we would like to take note that the collection during the Mass offering, will always go for the general fund of the SSPX community, likewise the amounts collected from the donation box is a separate collection for the church building construction.
In order to lightly sustain the mission in Tagbilaran, we therefore humbly appeal to your Christian Charity and Generosity. Please help us in the difficulties. We would like to reach out to all of you as possible. Let us therefore help one another, for the Love of God and the Traditional Mass! God is never outdone! What you do for Him, He will repay you a hundred fold! Your contribution may be given to Mrs. Carina “Bing” Apalisok or Ms. Cecil P. Olaer. Our sincerest thanks to all!
In Jesus and Mary,
Engr. Sergio J. Mellejor Jr. Secretary- Knights of Our Lady Tagbilaran City
Rev. Fr. Francis Chazal, SSPX Tagbilaran City, Chaplain
For several years now, the Sunday Latin Mass is held at the auditorium in Cogon Elementary School, which is just across Mrs. Lomod's residence where weekday Masses are offered. Fr. Francis Chazal visits Bohol every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month.
